Google now lets readers choose the sites they want to see more of. This free WordPress plugin adds Google’s official “Add to Preferred Sources” button to your posts, so your readers can pick you in one click. When someone chooses you, Google is more likely to surface your content for them, in Top Stories and in AI Overviews and AI Mode.
Try it right here
This is the real Google button, running on this page. If you are signed in to Google, click it and you will add anthonyhayes.io to your own preferred sources.
Find this useful? Add us as a preferred source on Google and more of what we publish will show up in your results.
Nothing to install to test it. If you do not see a button, you are either signed out of Google or using a browser that blocks it.
What this actually does
It is a per-reader preference, not a ranking factor, and it is worth being precise about that. Choosing a preferred source does not move you up the results for everybody. It tells Google that this particular person wants more of your work, and Google then favours you in what it shows them.
For anyone publishing regularly to a returning audience, that is the useful kind of visibility. Your readers get more of you without having to remember to come back, and since August 2026 the preference feeds Google’s AI surfaces too, not just Top Stories.
Google’s real button
The plugin loads Google’s official publisher script and uses Google’s own button element. It never draws a look-alike.
It hides itself
Google only renders the button for a signed-in visitor on a site it recognises. If it cannot render, the whole box stays hidden, so nobody sees an empty panel.
You choose the placement
Before the first heading, after a set number of paragraphs, at the end, or manually with a shortcode.
Light on the page
One async script, loaded only on the content types you pick. No jQuery, no tracking, no layout shift.
One thing to check before you install. Only sites Google already recognises as a source can show the button, and only domains and subdomains qualify, not subfolders. Search for your domain in Google’s source preferences tool. If you are not listed yet, the plugin is still safe to run: the button simply stays hidden until you are.
How to set it up
Check you are eligible. Search your domain in Google’s source preferences tool using the link above.
Install the plugin. Download it below, then go to Plugins, Add New, Upload Plugin, and activate it.
Pick where it shows. Settings, then Preferred Sources. Posts and “before the first heading” are a sensible default.
Check it while signed in to Google. Open one of your posts in a normal browser window. The button will not appear in a private window or a headless browser, which trips people up.
Download the plugin
Free, no signup needed. GPL licensed, works on WordPress 5.8 and above.

Frequently asked questions
Will this improve my rankings?
No, and be wary of anyone selling it that way. It is a personal preference that affects what an individual reader sees, not a sitewide ranking signal. The upside is real but it is about returning readers, not about outranking anybody.
Why can I not see the button on my own site?
Almost always one of two reasons: your domain is not in Google’s source preferences tool yet, or you are not signed in to Google in that browser. The button is a personalisation control, so it needs a signed-in session. It also will not appear in most private windows or automated browsers.
Does it slow the site down?
Google’s script is loaded asynchronously and only on the content types you select. Nothing else loads, and the box reserves its own space so the page does not jump.
Can I put it somewhere specific?
Yes. Set placement to manual and drop [preferred_sources_button] wherever you want it, including inside a page like this one.
