SEO & AI Search · Calculator sites

We built a calculator site with Claude and did no external SEO at all. Ahrefs, connected to my Search Console, shows it ranking for 124 keywords and getting about 3,200 visits a month. Here’s how we found the keywords, why calculators rank so easily, how they make money, and what I’d do next to grow it.

**No backlinks. No outreach. No external SEO of any kind.**

That’s what we did for one of our calculator sites. The team built it with Claude a while ago, before Aha Studio existed.

It’s ranking for **124 keywords** and getting about **3,200 visits a month**, according to Ahrefs connected to my Google Search Console. It has about 50 calculators.

This is real. And it’s prime for stepping up.

## Why calculators rank so easily

When someone searches “roofing calculator” or “mortgage overpayment calculator”, they want something to use.

A working calculator meets that intent perfectly. People stay, they play around with the numbers, and many of them come back. That dwell time tells Google the page delivered what the search asked for.

See how that works? The page does the job, so it ranks.

## How I found the keywords

I have about 40,000 calculator keywords in total.

Of those, **20,800** are rated “very easy” or “easy” for keyword difficulty in SEMrush. Those are the ones we put into the Aha Studio database. The rest are more competitive, so I leave them for later.

Two things I always keep in mind:

- **Search volumes are an indication more than anything else.** Use them to compare keywords against each other.

- **Judge competition by what’s ranking.** Look at the pages on page one and what type of content they are. If they’re thin articles and you’ve got a working calculator, you’ve got a chance.

## The old way took all night

A few months ago I got my team to build calculator sites by hand. It took them all night to do one site.

And we had all kinds of problems getting them working inside WordPress. JavaScript issues kept stopping the calculators from running.

Now the Calculator Sites worker in Aha Studio builds a whole site from one keyword in a few minutes, up to 100 calculators in one go. The maths is done by code from a fixed formula library, so the AI never does the sums. It publishes to Netlify or WordPress, or gives you plain HTML that works on any host.

## How calculator sites make money

- **Ads.** AdSense wants a certain amount of content first. Higher-paying networks like Mediavine look at your traffic volume, and tool sites can get surprisingly high traffic. Traffic from North America and Europe pays best.

- **Leads.** A calculator is a natural lead magnet. Someone who just worked out their roofing cost is a hot lead for a roofer.

- **Affiliate offers.** Put a relevant product or service next to the result.

- **Embeds.** Put one calculator on an existing site with embed code, to give a content page a reason to keep people there.

## What I’d do next to grow it

This site has never had any outside help. That’s the opportunity:

- **A few backlinks** to the calculators closest to page one.

- **More content around the calculators,** without burying them. The calculator stays the first thing people see.

- **Press releases.** You can put three links in a press release, so one piece of content gives you deep links to three calculators, and the syndication spreads them.

**My Take:** I like easy, and calculator sites are about as easy as SEO gets right now. We did no external SEO on this one and it still ranks for 124 keywords with about 3,200 visits a month. The searches are there, the competition is often weak, and a page that actually does the job keeps people on it. What used to take my team all night now takes a few minutes, so the hard part has moved. It’s choosing the right keywords, then getting the site seen.
